How many members does the Club have?

As at 2025, we have 160 members, of which 35 are ‘life’ members.

116 are female, 44 male. Our youngest member is 14 and we have a few aged 90+

No. However, we ask that after taking part in three activities, you apply for membership. That way, you’ll have had a taster and will have a good idea if it’s for you.

Application forms will be available from members of the Committee. You will need somebody to propose and a second person to support the proposal. The Committee will do the rest.

With effect from October 2025, membership costs £15 per year.

Yes £15, with effect from October 2025.

Sunday walks need to cover the cost of coach hire, so we charge £18 per adult (half price for 14–17-year-olds and students).

Weekday walks are free of charge, but of course they are self-drive and on occasions there may be a car park fee? We encourage car sharing and/or use of public transport.

Social get togethers are every other Wednesday and cost £3 entrance.

Club holiday costs are notified well in advance, prior to booking.

There are two or three walks each Sunday trip. You can decide on the day which one you fancy when we get there: that all depends on your fitness (and energy!) level. C walks typically 6/7 miles, B walks typically 8/10 miles and A walks typically 10/12 miles, all with varying amounts of ascent. But remember, rambling the fells is not the same as walking the same distance along the flat Crosby coastline.

Weekday walks vary from five to seven miles, with very little climbing.

You know your own fitness and energy levels; so, you can decide on the day of the walk.

Do make sure that you’ve got proper walking gear. It doesn’t have to be top of the range; but walking boots (with ankle support and good grip), rucksack and waterproofs are essential. A pole can be a big help too.

On Sundays, we arrive together, by coach. Once everybody is off (and usually made use of the toilet) and is ready, the leaders will by now have made themselves known. Just jump in with the group that you’ve chosen to walk with.

On Weekday walks, members arrive around 10:15, and make themselves known. Most know each other, but it’s always nice to welcome new faces.

It’s unusual for this to happen. You and your leader will have taken a view before the start of the walk, having read the detailed written descriptions provided. Groups usually have a back-marker supporting the leaders. They’re experienced in spotting any issues and can help the leader decide on the best course of action. This may entail cutting the walk short for one or more of the group. That said, there are regular short breaks for water and a breather. New members are encouraged to try C walks initially and progress if appropriate. However, you may have walked with other groups, are much more aware of your capabilities and are happy to join the A or B group.

No. However, we’d love to see more members having a go at what is a very rewarding thing to do. There’s bags of help and support from other leaders. But no, there’s absolutely no pressure on members, especially new ones, to start leading.

Sorry (and not sorry, depending on your preferences!!) we prefer NO DOGS on our walks. Not everybody is comfortable around dogs. There are also added health and safety issues raised, such as trip hazards, danger to livestock.

Our coach operator has a ‘no dogs’ policy; we therefore don’t need to consider the matter for our Sunday walks.

No. Once you’ve become a member, you can choose to take part in as much or as little as you like.

Each year, we hold an AGM and appoint an Executive Committee, which typically has fourteen members. The Committee members have responsibility for producing programmes of walking and social events, in addition to membership, finance matters and to ensure the needs of its members are addressed, now and into the future. They meet each quarter.

Yes, two per year. Spring/Summer and Autumn/Winter. All members are entitled to receive these.

Not as such. We are however affiliated (aff’n No LL.241213)

Yes. Each page on our web site has a link to Flickr, where we have thousands of great pics from walks and other club activities. It’s the little logo with a blue and red dot.
